A Picture a Day: 1 to 7

I have so many photographs clogging up my hard drive that I'd really like to be able to share with you, but I'm never sure how to include them in the blog, so I've decided to start a feature including seven random photos that I've taken each week. These pictures may be from the past week or could have been taken a few years ago. This isn't a picture diary just a collection of some of my favourite photos. I hope you enjoy the show.

1. Generic blossom picture.
2. Pretty view of a bridge from a beer garden.
3. Possibly the cutest kid in the world. My nephew.
4. One of the many bonfires/BBQs I've frequented this Spring.
5. Me and the boy soaking up the sun at the park.
6. The perfect breakfast.
7. The new love of my life. My Kindle.

Links a la mode: The IFB weekly roundup

Links a la Mode ~ 19th May 2011

I'm so excited to have been picked for this weeks IFB links a la Mode, for my Vintage Vision post last week, especially since it's the first time I've entered. There are lots of other really great links here too, so make sure you check them out.

I'm also really thrilled to have reached 400 followers this week. When I started this blog almost a year ago I didn't expect to get 40 followers nevermind 400. To celebrate I'll be holding a giveaway that I've been planning and preparing for quite some time now, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled early next week.

Thank you to everyone that finds the time to read my humble little blog.

DIY: Easy-Peasey Bunting

I've wanted some bunting for bloomin ages and have been meaning to get my act together and sew some for almost as long. I've always been reluctant to buy any considering the stupid prices they charge for a few bits of fabric sewn together, so when I saw a post titled 'no-sew bunting' on Gem Fatale's Style Blog I was so excited I set out to buy the necessities right away.

What you'll need...

~ Patterned Paper (wrapping  paper/wall paper/magazine cuttings/fabric)
~ Thin Card (old birthday cards/cereal boxes)
~ String/Ribbon
~ Glue
~ Scissors
~ Hole Punch

1. Firstly, cut out as many triangle shapes as you'd like with the card then cover the triangle in glue on one side and stick to the patterned paper, then cover the top side of the triangle with glue and wrap the patterned paper over it. Trim the edges back into a triangle shape. Repeat as necessary.

2. Use a hole punch to make two holes in the top of  each triangle.

3. Once you have covered and prepared all your triangles, thread the string/ribbon through the holes, double loop to secure each triangle in place. I spaced each triangle round three inches apart.

(Wrapping paper from Clinton Cards and The Book Cafe)

Happy Bunting Making!

As I mentioned above, I mostly followed Gem's tips, but with a few minor alterations. You can see the original post here along with lots of other inspirational DIY Tips.

Vintage Vision: Part Two

Vintage Fashion Definition ~ "Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 1980s is considered vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, or "vintage style" usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Reproduction clothing is a newly-made but faithful copy of an older garment." Wikipedia

(Apologies for the squinty eyes and comedy boobs!)

Vintage Polka Dot Pleated Skirt - Thrifted
Two Tone Brogues - Primark
Vintage Tapestry Satchel - Thrifted
Tan Skinny Belt - Primark

Lately I’ve been thinking alot about just how and why vintage fashion has become so popular in recent years. I know that many designers have taken inspiration from previous eras, but that doesn't really explain the interest in actual vintage clothing. I know it's not because vintage garments are cheaper than high street copies as I've seen dresses sold for hundreds on eBay, in fact as soon as you add the word vintage to anything second-hand the price increases disproportionally. Having said that, armed with the right know how, you can find beautiful vintages pieces for little more than a few pounds.

I couldn't quite figure it out, so I did a little research, and it seems popular belief that although second hand clothing has always been available, of the old and newer variety, it wasn't until people in the public eye started to fashion outfits with vintage pieces that we stood up and took note. The likes of Kate Moss, Dita Von Teese and Sienna Miller opened our eyes to something more than just clothes, but a history, an appreciation of the past as well as the potential to help the environment by recycling our old clothing. Perhaps people simply got bored of all the regurgitated designs that are churned out every season and wanted the real thing.

I believe that many are attracted to vintage clothing because of the unique nature of each garment and the thrill of finding that one of a kind piece, especially if you don’t have to pay over the odds. I also find that vintage garments are much more well made since they were actually designed to be worn for years and years and even passed down to younger generations.

It even hasn't gone unnoticed that some fashion sub-cultures such as the punk, rockability and gothic trends have created their own style using vintages garments such as punk rock inspired t-shirts, full fifties skirts and lace-up bodice corsets.

I know why I love vintage fashion, firstly, because it enables me to be unique in a way, I know that no one else is wearing my outfit, I don't want to be another Topshop clone. I’m fascinated by the stylings of previous era's, particularly the fifties and sixties. I'm drawn to the detailing in the fabric, the pretty buttons, the embroidery, lace and crochet, as they say ‘they don’t make em like they used to’. I also think back then fashion was more suited to the curvier woman. Clothing was designed to suit the figures of women like Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot, with nipped in waists and full flowing skirts, and pretty blouses with fitted pencil skirts, not to mention the introduction of the mini skirt in the sixties.

It's not just the clothing though it's the whole style that fascinates me. The hairstyles; huge beehives and polished chignons and the make-up; bright red lipstick and thick black eyeliner flicks with perfectly polished cheekbones. Even the lifestyle was so much prettier, beautiful old-fashioned architecture, classically styled cars, pretty china tea sets and an abundance of bunting.

Overall, I think vintage clothing allows us to be creative with our own style, by mixing different looks from different decades, but with the reassurance that we already know it works.

What is your favourite thing about vintage fashion?

OOTD: Blue Hue

~ Outfit Details ~

Polka Dot Head Scarf - Primark
Blue Jersey Dress - F&F for Tesco
Cardigan - Primark
Vintage Handbag - Blogger Giveaway
Vintage Scarf - Thrifted
Tan Loafers - Primark
Cameo Necklace - Primark
Teapot Pendant and rings- Miss Selfridge

Not the most exciting outfit again, but just a little something I threw on for Sunday lunch with the boy a few weeks ago. The cute little handbag is the one I won from Alex's giveaway over at Odd Socks and Pretty Frocks and I bloomin love it, although the picture doesn't really do it justice for some reason.

I've been thinking (uh oh), although it's been almost a year since I started this blog, I'm still not entirely happy with the structure and schedule of my posts. I'd really like to be more consistent with posting similar features each week rather that just haphazardly throwing together a post when I get time. I have a few ideas in mind, but I've decided to start with something easy, a regular Sunday outfit post with a little update on what I've been up to that week; welcome to The Sunday session, numero uno.  Hopefully this will also save me from running out of things to write about.

So without further adieu...

...This week I have...

Loved...the beautiful weather we've had, dinner with friends and getting back into blogging properly.
Loathed...those really annoying adverts for 'made in Chelsea'. It's not actually even started yet and I'm already sick of it.
Purchased...a straw fedora and some new gladiator sandals from Primark and a few bits and pieces from the usual charity shops including some lovely vintage shoes for my eBay shop.
Eaten...waaaay too much, thanks to an all you can eat Indian buffet and a huge Italian dinner for my friends 30th Birthday.
Visited...the boys parents for lunch today.
Listened to...my noisy student neighbours playing god awful music at full blast.
Been reading...the Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath.
Felt Inspired by...the Miss Selfridge Festival Collection, both the model and the collection are beautiful.
Been wishing for...this amazing weather to continue.
Finally...gotten around to posting my S/S wishlist.

I hope you all had a great week.

Spring / Summer Wardrobe Wishlist

I know I'm a little late with this post, considering Spring is already well and truly underway, in fact there's a pretty good chance that Summer will be over within a couple of weeks knowing the English weather. I have been meaning to do this for a while now, but just haven't had chance to put it all together until now.

To be quite honest I actually already have most of my Spring / Summer wardrobe sorted, lots of shorts, skirts, slouchy printed tees, floral skirts and dresses, gladiator sandals and lots of wayfarer sunglasses. The above really are wishlist pieces, although I do hope to be able to purchase at least of couple of these to top up my summer wardrobe. I think if I had all of these I'd have a very happy and stylish summer indeed, oh to be rich enough to have them all.

I hope you're all having a fabulous weekend so far. What's on your wishlist right now?

p.p.s I was really excited to find out I'd been featured on one of my favourite blogs, Dear Beatrice on her Style Inspiration of the week feature. Thanks Beatrice.
